Anthony Barry Explains The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, Barry competed in League Two. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer began through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
Rapid Rise
Barry's progression has been remarkable. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he built a name through unique exercises and great man-management. His club career led him to top European clubs, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. He's coached legends including top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both challenge limits. The approach involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”
Greedy Coaches
The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” he declares. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear during that time. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available since we took the job. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. They've already ensured qualification by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect all the positives from the top division,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the honesty. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a system that lets them to move and run similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst to get better is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names including former players. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
