RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
