Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yes, I would be lying otherwise," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any choice is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand Democratic congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to cut government money from the state and warned eliminating the authority to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy said, after a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a recent statement responding to the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recent poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom must consider running for president in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of previous highs to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The notion that a guy who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I await who emerges in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
