The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
