The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Trailer Appears Remarkably Similar to a Cartoon
The first trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has arrived. Is it surprising that, similar to most of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it looks very much like an cartoon and far less like a true live-action movie?
Spectacular Imagery Which Retain an Cartoonish Look
The preview for the new version of Moana is undeniably stunning. It includes grand visuals, beautiful soundtrack, and well-known personalities. Yet, it still appears like an cartoon. The exaggerated visuals depict figures soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui transforming into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is achieved through computer-generated imagery and CGI. Much like previous Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of animation is so extensive that it prompts the question: what defines these movies “live-action” besides the promotional label?
Story and Music Fans Adore
Regardless, this latest Moana appears to be a reimagining of the original story, complete with new renditions of the cherished songs. According to an official summary, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
Fresh Performers and Familiar Stars
Meanwhile, the teaser includes a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actress is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the character in the first movies.
One person who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be playing Maui. Of course, that character already looked like Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Character Makes an Appearance
Perhaps the highlight part of the trailer arrives in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei shows up, screaming at the camera. How else to introduce the film’s true mascot?
Release Date
The real-life version of Moana debuts in theaters on July 10, 2026.
