New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central policy, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live within me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
